Why You Need To Create An Ideal Customer Persona for Your E-commerce Store

Why You Need To Create An Ideal Customer Persona for Your E-commerce Store
Not everybody is your customer. Right now, I want you to accept that 99.99% of people out there aren’t ever going to buy from you. Don’t worry though, that’s still almost 80million potential customers (there are lot’s of humans – we aren’t going to run out anytime soon).

Do you know who your buyers are? Any idea why they choose to purchase from your online store?

Well, let me tell you… knowing this will help pretty much every area of your business.

  • You’ll be able to sell the products they actually want.
  • You’ll stop wasting money on marketing that’s failing to speak their language.
  • You’ll be welcomed into their tribe as one of them.
Have you ever heard that the “Riches are in the Niches” (you have to say that in an American accent otherwise it doesn’t rhyme). Well, it basically means that you need to get super specific about what you sell and who your selling to.

The smaller your group of potential customers the better sales are likely to be.

It’s like being a small fish in a big pond (no-one knows who you are and you’ll probably get munched by a shark) versus being the same fish but in a smaller pond (you look bigger because the space is smaller, and sharks aren’t keen on small ponds or something along those lines).

Basically, by niching down and focusing only on certain customers your online store will stand out.

How You Do You Know Who Your Ideal Customer Is?

But, how do you know who your ideal customer is? Well the great thing is you actually get to design them.

You get to pick the type of person who will be most valuable to your business.

Creating customer personas helps you to identify who your ideal customers are, what truly matters to them, where to find them, and how to please them.

Once you have that super valuable information, you can head out into the world and let them know you’re their new best e-commerce friend.

Everything you do from then on in your business is dedicated to solving their problem and making their life generally awesome.

Lovely stuff 🙂

So we should probably get on with defining who your ideal customer is!

How To Create A Customer Persona For Your Online Store

First we need to ask ourselves lots and lots of questions about the customer we want to attract. To do this we create an imaginary friend customer.

To make life nice and easy you can grab my downloadable worksheet below (click here) that will guide you through the questions and process.

Some of the questions I have included might seem totally weird or irrelevant – just go with it. We want to create a fully formed character, and it’s the little details that make them feel super real.

Right here is a nice long list of questions to get you started, enjoy!

  • Is your ideal customer male or female?
  • Where do they live?
  • What does your ideal customer look like (Be specific: hair/eye color, height, weight)?
  • How do they usually shop?
  • How old is your ideal customer?
  • Does you ideal customer have favourite brands?
  • Is your ideal customer single, married, divorced, widowed?
  • If he/she has children, how many and how old?
  • What type of education does he/she have?
  • How much money does your ideal customer earn?
  • Where does your ideal customer go on holiday?
  • What does he/she do to for a living?
  • What books or type of books does he/she read?
  • What are his/her favourite blogs, newspappers, magazines to read?
  • Does your ideal customer listen to podcasts, music, radio, audio books?
  • What is your ideal customer’s favourite drink?
  • Do they cook fresh food or frequently eat out?
  • Where does your ideal customer hang out online? (Instagram, FB, Twitter, Pinterest, specific websites?)
  • What person does he/she love to follow online?
  • Who or what inspires your ideal customer?
  • How long do they spend on their phone each day?
  • What does he/she like to do in their free time?
  • What is your ideal customer’s dream or aspiration?
  • Why would your ideal customer shop at your store?
  • Is he/she happy with where they are in life? Either way, why?
  • What is his/her biggest pain point or frustration in life?
  • What keeps your ideal customer up at night?

Why Should You Create Customer Personas?

To make more money duh!

According to Hubspot, websites that use customer personas are 2 – 5x more effective and convert better.

Basically, instead of wasting your time trying to please everybody and therefore pleasing exactly nobody, your focusing all your awesome attention and resources on helping a niche type of person and therefore pleasing them a whole lot!

You might feel like there are multiple customer personas within your business. However, at this point I highly recommend focusing on just one.
